Vuoden 2008 IGF-kilpailupelit julkistettu

Vuoden 2008 Independent Games Festivalin kilpailupelit on julkistettu ja niitä onkin koko joukko: Yhteensä 173 peliä. Joukossa on tuttujakin, esim. Understanding Games -flash-pelit (joita käsittelin tutkimusblogissani taannoin), USC:n DiGRA2007:ssa esittelemä The Night Journey, täällä lyhyesti esitelty moninpelilumipalloräiskintä Penguins Arena, samoin Esenthel ja Depths of Peril sekä useita arvostelu- ja linkityslistallani olevia, kuten:

  • Fez,
  • Gish 2,
  • Global Conflicts: Palestine,
  • Penumbra: Overture,
  • Schizoid,

screen1Depths of Peril on Soldak Entertainmentin kehittämä yksinpelattava toimintapainotteinen tietokonerope Windows-koneille. Pelissä pelaaja ottaa barbaariklaanin johtajan roolin ja pyrkii juonittelemaan ja taistelemaan itsensä koko Jorvikin kaupungin kuninkaaksi. Peli on mielenkiintoinen yhdistelmä isometrisesti kuvattua perustietokoneroolipelitoimintaa tehtävineen ja tasonnousuineen sekä Civilization-tyylistä klaanienvälistä diplomatiaa. Game Link: Snowball Fights with Penguins

Penguins Arena Screen 1Penguin Arena is a multiplayer FPS in which 4 clans of penguins fight for the ownership of ice floats. Pelilinkki: Pingviinien lumisota

Penguins Arena Screen 1Penguin Arena on moninpelattava 3D-lumisotapeli, jossa pingviinit taistelevat rajusti jäälauttojen herruudesta. Peli on nopeatempoinen ja toimintapainotteinen, eikä sisällä mitään yksinkertaista monen pelaajan lumipallohippaa kummempaa. Peli on saatavilla sekä Windowsille että Macille. Game Link: 3D CRPG Project Esenthel

Esenthel Screen 1Esenthel is an ongoing project to create a 3D computer role-playing game in the vein of the Elder Scrolls series (Morrowind, Oblivion). The game is being developed by an independent group of developers and game enthusiasts. While the development is still on-going (and I suspect that the final product won’t be released tomorrow) the group has released the newest demo of the game in the beginning of October. The demo consists of a short dungeon crawl and is essentially a concept and technology demostration. Read the rest of this entry »

Pelilinkki: Esenthel

Gamma Bros

Gamma Bros Start ScreenThe first review in the IGF series: Gamma Bros offers tight-grip 8-bit-neoretro-shoot’ em up action in your web browser.

Gamma Bros is a Flash based web shoot ‘em up game developed by Pixeljam Gamesin. The game was one of the finalists on this years Independent Game Festival’s Web-based Games series, and was edged out by Samorost 2, which won the series.

The game operates similarly than other vertically or horizontally scrolling shooters, with one crucial exception: besides moving his/her starship on all four directions (with the arrow keys) the player can also shoot in each direction (with the a, s, d and w keys). The enemy waves come from every direction and the action is twice as hectic compared with traditional shoot ‘em ups. An excellent innovation to the 2-D shmup genre and it works really well in practice too. Read the rest of this entry »

Independent Games Festival 2007

For my first series of themed blog entries I have chosen the finalist games of Independent Games Festival (IGF) 2007. Independent Games Festival is an event for indie game developers which is organized yearly during the Game Developers’ Conference. The main event of IGF is the indie game awards. This year the IGF was held in the beginning of March in San Francisco.

During the next few weeks I will go through as many IGF winners and finalists that I can and I’ll post reviews of all the games I have chance to try out. I’ll post the links to individual interviews to this entry also. You can check out this year’s winners and finalists for yourselves at the IGF website.
