Gengo Madness

I installed the Gengo plugin. And it works, kind of. It just seems to be such a complex toy that it demands a lot of work under the hood to make everything work.

Done by now:

  • Localized the basic phrases of basic views (posted in, pvm, next posts etc.)
  • Defined two languages and the category names for both of them
  • Used the template functions to make a language control “widget” (not a real widget I’m afraid)
  • Fought with different category options, to no avail
  • Caused a SQL error whenever one tries to read the blog in both of the languages (read one language at a time, please!)

To DO:

  • Localize the category list
  • Debug the SQL error
  • The option for that is to make a simple language switcher
  • Translate the earlier posts
  • Get the summaries visible somehow (the template function did not seem to work)

So, this’ll keep me just as busy as repairing an old house. I hope this doesn’t go on forever. Unfortunately I had to discard the polls as well as they did not co-operate with Gengo.

New Theme

I really didn’t like the old Nebula theme too much so I went and got another one. That Nebula one was too dark and kind of 90’s game-like. This one debt-3.0, is much more fun. I made a new header image by adding a couple of old pictures and I really like the outcome. Couple of wrinkles still to smooth out, and maybe that gengo thingy too.

A Mix of Finnish and English

I decided to write the posts regarding my presentation at Finncon in Finnish. I’m eventually going to install the Gengo plug-in and make this blog effectively bilingual. Unfortunately that will have to wait a while.

Founding the Blog

I’m starting this new blog because my old one died. Actually I have my work blog still intact, but I liked the idea of having another one for other things - this one is themed towards games outside the so-called hardcore gaming. This means a lot of things such as indie game development, alternate reality games, new game interfaces etc. etc. I’ll start from this quite open definition and work on it as I go on.

This blog serves also as a place for me to prepare my upcoming speech at Finncon / Animecon and share material (and thoughts, ideally) with attendees as well as those unable to attend but interested.I’m excited, we’ll see how it goes.

Ps. There will also be a section for my personal remarks of life, universe and everything else in the traditional non-themed blog sort of way. However, those posts won’t be seen on the index page (or in the feeds when I get around to it). I include that section because I’ve found it interesting to write and I’m not including it to post lists because those interested in my personal blog aren’t necessarily interested in the game side and vice versa. Keeping them in the same site just reduces the hassle.
