Day Off: Fifa 08 for Wii

Fifa08 Screen 2Once in a while you have to take a break off your routine and what a better day to do it on than a day off. This blog discusses indie games, meaning the games that do not get published by the major global entertainment game publishers out there (you know who). With this post I’ll make an exception when I briefly recount my first experiences on EA’s Fifa 08 football game on Nintendo Wii. I may continue this trend on some occasion on other renditions of this Day Off feature.

As some of you may have figured out by now, I really like football (or soccer) games. PES is just about the most fun you can have with a group of like-minded friends and occasionally I like to withdraw myself from the hectic urban life of Finland to the ascetic surroundings of Football Manager. There has been no real footie games on Wii, so getting Fifa 08 as soon as it was published was really a no-brainer. I’ve tested the Fifa franchise in the beginning of this decade and the game did not impress me then. Many people reported Fifa 07 to finally catch up on Pro Evolution Soccer on the soccer-like gameplay feel and playability, but I was happy with my PES6 so I didn’t test those theories myself.

Fifa08 Screen 1To my surprise I’ve enjoyed Fifa 08 so far very much. Surely the controls are unique and kind of peculiar, but for one I enjoy flicking the Wiimote fiercely to shoot. The gameplay and the events on the pitch feel like football too. And the free-kicks and corners seem to be better represented in Fifa than in PES. I still haven’t gotten around to test the online multiplayer mode and haven’t really played that much, so the jury is still out, but all in all, a positive surprise.
